What is it about Brie that just seems so fancy? Impress your guests (or just yourself) with an easy to make Brie appetizer: Baked Brie.

Ingredients, Substitutions, & Budget

This total recipe costs $5.49 to make. It will serve about 4 people as an appetizer (with something for dipping) which works out to $1.37 per serving.

Your grocery costs are probably different than mine. Location, shopping habits, seasonal availability, and other things can all have a major impact on the cost of food. Find out how I calculate what a recipe costs.

Baked Brie Ingredients

There is just ONE ingredient in this dish.

Brie ($5.49)

You need an uncut wheel of Brie for this recipe. We’re baking it so it’s going to turn into good and if there’s a cut side the oozing cheese will spill out

A ~170 gram wheel of Brie will work as an appetizer for about 4 people. This is about the smallest size of Brie available at my grocery stores. You can get larger wheels (my grocery store has several sizes available between 170 and 500 grams).

A bigger wheel will serve more people but take a bit longer to bake.

You can substitute Brie with Camembert. Brie and Camembert are very similar. Brie is a bit milder, softer and creamier. Camembert typically has less fat.

Optional Add-Ins/Ons

Plain baked brie is delicious on its own. But if you want to spruce it up, you can try adding one (or more) of these tasty add-ins/ons:

  • Honey: drizzle on after baking
  • Maple Syrup: drizzle on after baking
  • Garlic: slice slits in the top of the brie and add sliced/minced garlic before baking
  • Fresh Herbs: sprinkle on before baking (making shallow slits into brie rind is optional) or place sprigs into packets. Rosemary and thyme are popular choices.

Equipment & Plating

Baked Brie is pretty simple to make and requires minimal equipment.

Shallow Dish

This dish needs to be slightly larger than the Brie (so that the brie will fit into it) and shallow enough that you won’t burn yourself when dipping into the brie.

It also needs to be ovenproof.

If your Brie came in a wooden box, you don’t necessarily need a shallow dish. You can bake the brie in the box. However, it won’t stay melty and gooey for as long (because the box won’t retain heat the same way a dish will).

Small Tools

To make this recipe, you’re going to want the following small tools:

  • Parchment Paper: this is optional, but I like to put parchment paper on the inside of my dish. This means I can pull the parchment out after eating and scrape up every last bit of brie to enjoy!

Alternative Cooking Methods

You don’t have to bake a brie in the oven, you can do it in the microwave.

Microwave

The advantage of using the microwave is speed. Your brie will be melty and gooey in just a couple of minutes.

The downside is that it won’t stay melty and gooey for very long. But let’s be real, Brie is going to be eaten up pretty quickly anyways.

Microwave your Brie for 30 seconds on high. Check it (by very gently touching the center). If it doesn’t feel super soft (like it’s on the verge of collapse), repeat.

A small Brie wheel will typically take about 2 minutes.

Got Leftovers?

You’re clearly not at my house. I’ve never experienced leftover Brie. I have experienced stomach pains from too much brie though (10/10 would do again).

Seriously though, if you can’t eat all the brie save it for later. It can be reheated (in the microwave) and enjoyed.

  • Reheat: leftover brie can be reheated in the microwave (10 second intervals until gooey).
  • Refrigerate: you can store leftover brie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Repurpose: Use your leftover baked in a different recipe.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • Wheel of Brie ($5.49)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350*F. (note 1)
  • Unwrap your Brie and place it in a shallow ovenproof dish (just big enough to fit the Brie). (note 2)
    Wheel of Brie
  • Bake for 12+ minutes until melted through. (note 3)
If you gently touch the top middle of the brie and it feels like it’s on the verge of collapse, it’s done. If you’re not certain, insert a skewer. If it won’t insert (or is difficult to get in), it’s overbaked. If it comes out clean (ish), it’s underbaked. If it comes out with melted cheese on it, it’s ready to be devoured.
  • Serve & Enjoy!

Notes

  1. 350*F is the ideal temperature but you can bake at a higher temperature (useful if you’re putting other things in the oven). Anywhere up to 425 should be fine, but this will reduce the cooking time so keep a closer eye on it.
  2. If you don’t have a shallow dish, you can put your Brie wheel on a piece of parchment (crinkled up to surround it a bit) and bake it on a baking sheet.
  3. Cooking times will vary depending on the size of your Brie. Anything around 200 grams will likely take 12 to 15 minutes. At 500 grams it’ll be around 25 minutes.
