I love roasted garlic! It’s so delicious and easy to make.

But honestly, I really only make it when I have guests. Everyone finds it so delicious (and impressive). I typically serve it with Baked Brie and other goodies on a Charcuterie Board.

Ingredients, Substitutions, & Budget

This total recipe costs $0.84 to make. It makes 1 bulb of roasted garlic. I usually do one bulb per 3 people which works out to $0.28 per serving.

Your grocery costs are probably different than mine. Location, shopping habits, seasonal availability, and other things can all have a major impact on the cost of food. Find out how I calculate what a recipe costs.

Roasted Garlic Ingredients

There are 3 ingredients in this dish.

Garlic Bulb ($0.79)

You need a whole head of garlic!

The best garlic is firm and feels heavy for its size. Don’t use dried out garlic, or bulbs with mold or soft spots.

Oil ($0.04)

Choose a neutral cooking oil. Whichever you typically use. I go with olive oil.

Salt ($0.01)

A sprinkle of salt is all you need.

Equipment & Cooking Methods

There are options for roasting garlic.

The exposed garlic needs to be protected so it doesn’t burn.

Baking Sheet & Packets

One option is to cook it in packets on a baking sheet. You can make your packets out of foil or parchment. Be sure to leave airspace above the cut garlic so it doesn’t stick to your packet.

This is the method I use because I’m usually tossing my roasted garlic into the oven with other things.

Muffin Tins

Another option is to use a muffin tin (or two).

You can put your garlic bulb(s) in the muffin tin and tent some foil overtop. Or you can flip a second muffin tin on top.

Garlic Roasting Pot

A final option is to buy a garlic roasting pot. I don’t have one but I could see it being a great option if you want to roast garlic regularly while cooking other things.

Small Tools

To make this recipe, you’re going to want the following small tools:

  • Chef’s Knife: to slice your garlic

Got Leftovers?

Just eat them. Spread them on toast or crackers or potatoes and enjoy. I mean, if that doesn’t appeal to you, you can always save them for later.

  • Reheat: leftover roasted garlic can be reheated quickly in the microwave.
  • Refrigerate: you can store leftover roasted garlic in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • Freeze: You can freeze extra garlic for up to 3 months. Allow it to cool completely and store in an airtight container.
  • Repurpose: Use your leftover roasted garlic in any recipe that calls for garlic.

Ingredients

  • 1 head Garlic ($0.79)
  • 1 tsp Olive Oil ($0.04)
  • Pinch of Salt ($0.01)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400*F (ish). (Note 1)
  • Remove the papery layers from the whole garlic bulb (leave the cloves attached and keep their individual skins).
    1 head Garlic
  • Slice off ¼ to ½ inch from the top of the bulb to expose the interior of the cloves.
Alternatively, and this is great for LARGE heads of garlic, you can cut it in half and roast both halves.
  • Place garlic in foil/parchment packets or muffin tins cut side up.
  • Drizzle with oil and sprinkle with salt.
1 tsp Olive Oil, Pinch of Salt
  • “Seal” the packets (or tins), leaving an air pocket at the top so the cut garlic doesn’t stick.
  • Bake for 30 minutes (or more). (Note 2)
  • Cool until touchable without burning.
  • Remove cloves from skins (Note 3), serve, & enjoy!

Notes

  1. You can roast garlic at temperatures between 350-425*F. This will affect the cook time.
  2. After about 30 minutes, the garlic should be soft to touch. BUT some garlic can take up to 60 minutes to be ready. The age of your garlic, oven temperature, garlic size, etc can all affect cooking time. If it’s not done at 30 minutes, keep checking every 5-10 minutes.
  3. There are 2 ways to remove the skins:
    • remove a clove and squeeze the garlic out from the bottom
    • slice a slit in the paper and use a fork (or your fingers) to pull the cloves out
